SATGEB 1: Defense Industry Sub Region

The first stage project of the Defense Industry R&D Unit (SATGEB) is to the west end of the Middle East Technical University (METU) Technopark campus. In the direction of the university, the property has been sharply bordered off by an artificial hill; on the Bilkent side, however, it can be clearly perceived from the New Technopark gate. Within SATGEB, there are office buildings of various dimensions of companies like HAVELSAN, ASELSAN, TAİ and TUSAŞ, engaged in deliberations of R&D in the defense industry field of the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation, as well as a joint center to extend social and technical service to these offices.

SATGEB was designed in a way to have its own campus within that of Technopark. Utmost attention was attributed to the creation of urban spaces and to the formulation of exterior spaces. The topographic inclination of the terrain, development conditions, directional positioning, artificial hill, regulations regarding the security of the installations, and similar elements have been influential in the bringing together of different structures. The office buildings have been positioned parallel to the inclination in the north western direction, and a common exterior space was created between the construction levels. The long masses of HAVELSAN and TAİ have been positioned in the southern end of the property, in a way integrating with the upper level line of the artificial hill at roof level. Other open spaces have been defined by smaller structures below this upper frame.
